Tips for Gluten Free Family Cooking
When it comes to cooking as a family, you can expect some challenges and things may get messy. Even if the fruits of your labor turn out entirely inedible, remember what you’re really gaining: time spent together and a collection of new memories.
As you and your family step into the kitchen together, keep the following tips in mind:
- Let your kids be involved in picking out the recipe – they will be more engaged if they feel like they got to play a part in choosing the activity.
- Take opportunities to teach your kids – cooking is about more than just following a recipe, there are plenty of chances to teach simple skills along the way.
- Keep it age-appropriate – when doling out tasks, keep safety and practicality in mind. Your 5-year-old might be better suited to measuring out flour than chopping veggies.
- Be prepared for things to get messy and don’t worry about it. You should expect a little mess when kids are involved – plan for it and don’t let it ruin the experience.
Provide guidance and supervision as needed – give your kids the space to complete their assigned tasks but provide guidance (and compliments) as appropriate. And if you need more guidance, there are a number of gluten free meal kits that can help.
- Don’t get too caught up in perfection – while the goal is to eat what you’ve prepared, cooking is challenging and it’s not always going to work. Focus on having fun and enjoy the experience.
When it comes to cooking, there are no rules. The kitchen is the perfect place to do a little experimentation and who better to share it with than your family? Grab an assortment of ingredients from the pantry and see what you can come up with or try some of the gluten free recipes below.
